Overview of Models

The Silvey #510 is the most versatile of all the Silvey round grinders. It is capable of sharpening all types of round chainsaw chain -- 1/4", .325", 3/8", and .404" pitch. It can also sharpen .063" gauge harvester chain.  This popular grinder is used for production sharpening in many saw shops, for crew sharpening, and by individuals who want a top-of-the-line round grinder. It's large diameter wheel offers great wheel life and its built-in wheel wear compensation keeps the grinding wheel centered throughout its life. Other features, such as the patented "faultless" stop pawls make this grinder a pleasure to use.

The Silvey #510-80 is similar to the grinder above. The only difference between the two is the chain mounting bar.  On a #510-80 this mounting bar has an .080" groove, allowing it to sharpen .080" gauge harvester chain like Oregon #18HX. This new "beefier" .404"pitch harvester chain can not be sharpened on a standard #510 chain grinder. Its wide drive links are too thick to fit in the chain mounting bar. The #510-80 is fitted with the right size mounting bar, and the grinder is set up so the grinding wheel centers with it.

The Silvey #P&D is also a member of this family. From the outside, it looks very similar to the #510 series grinders, but this grinder is set up for sharpening the big 3/4" pitch saw chain, like Oregon's #11BC and #11H.  This big chain will not fit on a #510 series machine. It requires a grinder with a larger mounting bar and grinding wheel. The #P&D's mounting bar has a .122" groove in it and the grinding wheel is 5/16" thick. The #P&D also has a larger wheel dressing stone.

The #P& D's name comes from "Pond and Deck." The big 3/4" pitch chain, such as Oregon's #11BC, was originally developed for use on big electric "pond" saws that bucked logs on a mill deck.  Early  #P&D grinders were only used in saw mills, but that has changed. Today, both this grinder, and the big 3/4" pitch chain it was designed for, is also used by owners of mechanized harvesters.

Our Advice

Choosing a Silvey round grinder is easy. For sharpening chainsaw chain, there is only one choice, the #510. The other two machines are for grinding special saw chain found only on mechanized harvesters and on saws used on the log deck in a saw mill.
